How to connect to Windows 10/11 VPN for Faculty/Staff

These instructions are for setting up the Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection on Windows 10 personal and campus computers for faculty and staff at South Dakota Mines. Installing and connecting the VPN will enable users to access campus resources and software licensing. Please note that these instructions will not work for student accounts and are intended for South Dakota Mines use only.

Windows 10/11

Setup VPN Connection

  1. Go to Settings → Network & internet → VPN
  2. Click the 'Add VPN' button.

  3. Configure the VPN as shown in the picture below.

    VPN provider: Windows (built-in)
    Connection name: Mines VPN

    VPN Type: Automatic
Type of sign-in info: User name and password
User name: use your campus email address

  4. Click “Save” when finished.

Connect to the SDSMT VPN

  1. Go to Settings → Network & internet → VPN
    1. If on Windows 11, click on the group of icons located in the bottom right corner of the taskbar, if on Windows 10, you will see a network icon  instead.

    2. On Windows 11, select VPN. (If on Windows 10, then skip to the next step)

  2. Select the VPN connection that was created above and click “Connect”.

  3. You will be prompted to sign in with your campus credentials.

  4. The previous step will send a push to your mobile device. Open DUO on your mobile device and approve the push to proceed.

  5. After a few moments, the VPN will connect and you should be able to access campus resources (files, printers, software licenses) as needed.

Note: If you are on campus using a university-owned computer or student tablet PC and successfully connected to the "sdsmtwpa" wireless network, you do not need to use a VPN connection to access network resources.
