How to check for updates

Introduction

This guide will direct you through the three sources of updates on most machines

Environment

Lenovo Computer plugged into power

Instructions

Check for Microsoft Updates

  • Press the window key and search "Check for Updates"

  • Click the check for updates button

  • After you have checked for and have done the updates listed, restart your computer then check again.

 

Check for optional updates

  • From the update page, click on "Advanced Options" 

  • In the advanced Options page, check "Optional Updates" to see if there are any available
  • If available: click on "Optional Updates" and select all of the optional updates that don't say 'preview' and click the "Update" button
  • If not available: Skip forward to System Updates

 

Lenovo System Updates

  • Press the windows key and search for "System Updates"
  • Lenovo computers use System Updates, but other brands use different programs

  • Select next

  • Check all of the updates in each of the three tabs then click next

  • If this pops up, Be sure to have your computer plugged in and don't try to turn it off during the duration of the updates

**Tampering can hurt your computer beyond repair** 

  • Allow your computer to go through all of the updates and the restart
  • After the restart, Check for more System Updates  

Notes:

  • If the same update pops up repeatedly, wait a few weeks and try updating again. Microsoft often puts out patches for updates with issues. 
  • Don't want to do updates? Drop your computer by ITS and we can update it for you and do health scans at the same time.
