Troubleshooting Network Printer Issues

Please reference the steps below for things to check for when you have issues with a campus printer. Do one of the steps below and check if your issue still occurs and if it persists, try another step.

Restart

Restarting your computer is an excellent first step as it can let your computer let go of bad code and allow it to start things fresh.

This alone can help fix a bounty of issues.

Windows Updates

Start by restarting your device.

Click on the searchbar or press the windows key and type "update." Then select "check for updates"

After opening that window, even if it says you have no updates, select "check for updates."

After allowing those updates to go through, restart your computer.

Keep doing this until your computer shows no more updates when you click on "Check for updates."

After that is done, type "view optional updates" in the searchbar and do all of the updates shown in the window.

You may have to expand the dropdown to be able to select the updates. Then Select the "Download & Install" button toward the bottom.

Do one last restart.

Remove the Printer

Either click in the searchbar or press the windows key and type "Printers & Scanners".

From that list, select the printer you are having issues with. In the new window, click the "Remove" button.

Add a Printer

Please follow this already written guide:

https://support.sdsmt.edu/TDClient/30/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=2

If you don't find the printer you are looking for on the list, it is possible you are not part of the group that printer belongs to. In that case, you should ask the secretary of the department that the computer is located in to ask if they will allow you to have access to that printer group.

You then need to fill out this ticket to formally make the request to be added to that group: https://support.sdsmt.edu/TDClient/30/Portal/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=29

Print Credits

If you are a student and you aren't able to print to a network printer that you are connected to, it could be that you are out of print credits.

To check this, please double-click the icon the school placed onto your computer labeled "Print credits." After doing so, click the "^" symbol on the bottom right of the toolbar.

There should be a symbol that looks like a black dollar sign. clicking on that should pop up a small window with your free quota and the amount you have added to your account.

If you do find that this is the problem, follow the guide below and please read it carefully as there is an important step described in a large block of text: https://support.sdsmt.edu/TDClient/30/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=188
