How to Reset a School Computer for Personal Use

Introduction

This guide explains the full process of resetting a school computer after buying the reset drive

Environment

Lenovo computer with charger plugged in

Instructions

  • Make sure your computer has the latest updates (If your computer is not up to date, it can interfere with the program on the USB)
  • Power down your computer
  • Plug the reset USB into the computer
  • Press the power button
  • When the screen shows this Image, tap F12 to bring up the boot menu

  • Select the USB from the boot menu

  • Press Y to accept the erasure of the harddrive

  • Press y to accept the fresh installation of Windows

  • Wait for the program to finish installing windows and remove the USB when it indicates

  • Let the device restart then go through the Out of Box experience
  • Select your country

  • Select the keyboard you want to use

  • Connect to the Internet (WPA won't work)

  • Let the computer update and restart

  • Read through the Licence agreement and accept it at your discretion

  • Name your computer

  • Choose set up:
  • Personal Use: If you want to tie it to an already existing Microsoft account
  • Work or school: If you want your computer to be separate from any existing account (Continued below)

  • Select sign in options

  • Select "Domain join instead"

  • Enter the name for your new profile on your computer 

  • Enter and verify your profile's password

  • Choose security questions and enter their answers

  • Set up or skip facial recognition sign in

  • Select your privacy settings

  • Allow computer to finish updates and restart

  • Get the Windows Licence from Azure according to this guide
  • Press the windows key and search for "Activation Settings"

  • Select "change product key"

  • Insert the product key and select next to activate it

The reset USB can now have it's contents deleted and be used as you see fit.
